Books and Tags

This has been going around for the last couple of days. Shamelessly I tagged myself, because... (nobody tagged me) well, there's no reason, but I did it anyway.

1) One book that changed your life?
Anne of Green Gables (and the series) in a way that I could see myself starting to (attempt to) write stories, and matchmake people ;)

2. One book you have read more than once?
To kill a Mockingbird. Love the book to bits. I've read it again and again and again....(And all the Harry Potters- up till the Half blood Prince)

3. One book you would want on a desert island?
The catcher in the Rye. If I'm alone (quite normal on a desert(ed) island, I'll need a conversation partner, and I'm pretty sure that Holden Caulfield will rise to the occasion)

4. One book that made you laugh?
God Knows by Joseph Heller - I still think about it (and laugh) :)

5. One book that made you cry?
Cry... as in buckets upon buckets of tears - no.(not that i'm an insensitive git, but due to my preference for comedy) But I got pretty emotional reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinback. I just remembered: What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge.

6. One book you stayed up all night to finish?
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy (oh, and by the way, I cried while reading it the 2nd time... why is that, I wonder )

7. One book that took you too long to read?
A town like Alice by Nevil Shute. I was 8 when I started and finished it when I was 13 with the first chapter repeated countless number of times throughout that period. And yet, there are about 4 unread pages due to some printing error... :(

8. One book you are currently reading?
The Public conffessions of a Middle aged woman by Sue Townsend. I desperately need the humour

9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Any of Terry Pratchett's books.
Highly recommended, but... haven't got hold of any yet

10. Now tag five people.
Consider yourself tagged if you bothered reading this post till the very end ;)

  2. Brilliant! Now I can say that I've been tagged!

I've reread To Kill a Mockingbird a couple of times to, even though I don't really enjoy the book and wouldn't recommend it to other people who want to read an entertaining book. I guess I like it because it's so... thought-provoking and real. I really envy my sisters; because they stayed in England long enough to go to high school there, they got to study To Kill A Mockingbird for their literature, while I'm fobbed off with The Pearl >:(

  3. Wow, this is one tag I don't mind doing - one that deals with one of my favourite subjects - books! :-D

I'd recommend you try & read Philip Pullman's The Dark Materials Trilogy - it's one of my favourite reads - and also anything from George Orwell, esp Animal Farm, that is, if you haven't already :-)

  4. Silver Sabre: Thanks for sharing... I'm sure if My girl was made into a book (if they haven't already - sorry for the ignorance) then it'll definately count

Anisah: Ha! ha! you're back, after a hiatus... I totally love Jean Louise Finch... Beautiful book... though I've never recommended it to anyone else besides my sister...

Pugly: Yay... it's great finding people who adore books... I guessed so once I read your beautiful stranger post :) I definately will try out your suggestions the next time I go book shopping.

  5. 1) One book that changed your life?

1984 by Orwell... it introduced me to the posibility of an evil society and all that jazz...

    2) One book you have read more than once?

I haven't read a book more than once. I find that either I get bored with it (a very, very sinful thing) or I stop liking it as much because I get tired of it (very bad too). Or maybe I just haven't found that one book that'd I'd read more than once.

    3) One book you would want on a desert island?

I'd like... Catch-22 would be awesome.

    4) One book that made you laugh?

Just one? All Vonnegut has made me laugh. But I'll go with my most recent read: One flew over the cuckoo's nest.

    5) One book that made you cry?

Oh jeez. Um... I can't remember. I don't usually cry with books... But I remember I cried when I read this one manga volume of Fruits Basket... Kyo was cute there...

    6) One book you stayed up all night to finish?

And then there were none by Agatha Christie. The ending was the best thing ever!!!

7)One book that took you too long to read?

Well, Catch-22 took me all summer but... I haven't finished an anthology of poe's short stories that I started about two years ago... so that one wins!

    8) One book you are currently reading?

Two actually. One flew over the cuckoo's nest (for school, although I am enjoying it greatly) and 'The Poe mystery' I guess it's called translated (I'm reading it in Spanish) by Matthew Pearl.

    9) One book you have been meaning to read?

Anthem by Ayn Rayd (I just bought it but it's going to have to wait until I'm done with all my school summer reading)

  7. Ooh me likey!

    1) one book that changed your life:
so many... surrounded by books... The Discourses by Niccolo Machiavelli, probably the understanding of this book was what pushed me into my current field of international political theory. I love you Nicky Mac!

    2. One book you have read more than once.
I'm a real fan of re-reading books, but probably the one I've read most is Pride and Prejudice.

    3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Lord of the Rings or War and Peace. I know that's two books, but they're both good long, enjoyable reads.

    4. One book that made you laugh
Any Ross O'Carroll Kelly book... they all make me howl with laughter

    5. One book that made you cry
Unlike the rest of you I cry at books all the time, but the book that has made me cry the most is The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

    6. One book you stayed up all night to finish
The End of the Affair by Graham Greene

    7. One book that took you too long to read

Haunted by Chuck Something or other (guy who wrote fight club). I didn't read it for that long, but its a really horrible book and I wanted to get to the end, so the few days were really painful... in the end I skipped to the last chapter... so I guess I haven't really read it!

    8. One book you are currently reading
I'm not allowed novels at the moment due to college work, but for that I am currently reading Liberty Beyond Neo-Liberalism by Stephen Slaughter. The last novel I read was The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood

8.One book you have been meaning to read:
Kant's Critique of Pure Reason... so big, so difficult, so necessary..

Also Anusha can I be another recommender of Terry Pratchett. He is without doubt my favourite author and once you're in, you're hooked. The books are so full of thought and so much fun at the same time. I eagerly await all his new publications!!

  9. it's chuck palahniuk, aunty...

a very disturbing writer... I've only liked reading Fight Club... the rest were pretty fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I happen to love Chuck. His works are very disturbing - getting more disturbing as of late - yet they're perfect satirical pieces on life & the fucked-up souls in it.

Plus, I love his style of writing. He's one of those rare few who can convey so much in so little words. I'd recommend you start with `Invisible Monsters'.

  11. So Chuck Palahniuk it shall be... KP Dick wrote some disturbing stuff too... wish I lived nearer to one of the large MPHs.

  12. I live really close by to One Utama. Takes less than five minutes to walk there, and the MPH there is huge. A bookaholic's idea of what paradise should be like. Heh heh.

Though I really hate the fact that they wrap their books. Like, hello, the only reason I actually go to MPH every weekend is to read the books they have there, for God's sake. Do they really think I can afford all the books I want to read, when one costs RM32.90?

Usually I just hide in a corner and rip the plastic off while glancing furtively over my shoulder just in case anyone notices/realises what I'm doing...

  14. I love Anne of Green Gables! I remember reading it in 6th grade. My best friend and I got to act out a scene from the book for a class project and we did such a great job and had so much fun! Thanks for bringing back that memory! Great Meme...thanks for participating in the carnival. : )

  16. I haven't read most of these, but To Kill A Mockingbird was fantastic.

I turned this meme into a Thursday Thirteen HERE.

But I always like to write down books that others love and try to check them out at the library.
