JUST MY LUCK

In an otherwise almost normal and mundane existence, there is a certain person who calls herself TS who has the occasional need to  throw her hands in the air in frustration, and utter the words - "Just My Luck" Allow her to explain: 1. She has been skeptical about buying things online (except for the occasional plane ticket) for a very long time, until one day, her sister forwarded a Groupon offer to her that was the perfect complement to a certain brand new 'toy' she just got herself. She had finally crossed an unseen threshold and purchased something online, something she's never done before. The item which she purchased at the end of last year was supposed to arrive at her doorstep in mid January. Now, it's nearing the end of February and apparently, the item is still waiting for clearance from China. At least Groupon has been contacting her (and others who took up the offer) and giving updates on the delay, but still... 2. The dentist told her that...

Revenge of the CPU and a Broken CD

Image
If they could keep still at any other time other than while driving, I'd have doubts that they belonged to me, or at least I'd have doubts that they were once attached to me. My habit of not keeping my legs still came back to haunt and hit me right where it hurts the most today - my left kneecap, probably after the CPU had had enough of abuse all these years with my consistent non-intentional kicking. The CD in all it's broken glory :( On another unrelated note, a CD that I won in a contest ages ago just broke after having a bad, bad fall. I attempted calling all the kings men and horses although I realised that it was a lost cause, but like Humpty Dumpty, the CD could not be put back together again. Of course the kings men and their horses never arrived to my rescue, because I don't know any kings. I won the CD after answering a question on the cable music channel via e-mail, as I was strangely fixated with the band REM back then after hearing their song Shiny H...

As The Horse Sleeps

Way back when my friends and I were young and silly (not that we're not silly anymore, we're just not that young anymore), a conversation of this sort took place: C: I'm so sleepy I could sleep standing up! M: Are you a horse? Now, I brought up this old conversation because I've only had an average of perhaps 2 hours of sleep a day since Sunday. I could indeed sleep standing up (falling over will occur afterwards) if it weren't for me reverting back (albeit temporarily) to my morning coffee, which admittedly has helped me go through the day, but when it comes to night, and the moment my head hits the pillow, violent coughing ensues. I think it is physically impossible to sleep while coughing, (or is it cough while sleeping?) just like how you can't breathe and swallow at the same time. The point is, lying down causes the cough to start, and the coughing makes sleeping impossible. I so wish I was a horse right now. On another note, I finally made the vi...

The Internet vs Terra

Image
She took the modem out of the refrigerator this morning, gave it a pat on the back and whispered sinisterly... "you better be in working order tonight" Connection problems never seem to leave me. All my life (Oh, fine... the past year mostly) I've had to deal with inefficient customer service, disconnections, a broken ethernet port right after my laptop warranty is over, and in the latest "don't let Terra get on the net" attack, my modem decides to act up. I spent about 3 hours last night attempting to connect, but my adsl light kept flickering and wouldn't stay still. Nothing worked, seriously... and as a result I went through the following processes relentlessly. Hence the three hours.... Patted it nicely Tied the connection with rubber bands (the connection port is a wee bit loose, I noticed) Turned it on and off again and again Restarted the laptop (why? I don't know) Changed all the wires I could think off Changed them again (I ...

Of old fans and fishing poles

I suppose it wouldn't be too far off the mark if I were to tell you that it all began with the economic crisis of 1997. You see, it was because of the crisis that the university upped it's intake from 4000 students to over 6000 students the year I went in by absorbing the MARA scholars who were supposed to further their education abroad. It was also because of that, a dorm room that was meant for two found itself with three people. And then there was the old fan. Not any ordinary old fan which would creak like joints on a cold day while cooling the air, but the kind of old fan that simply refused to speed up although you turned the speed to maximum. For that reason, we slept at night with the windows thrown open (after all, we were on the 2nd floor and it was a pretty safe place (university residential college) or so we thought), dealing with the consequences of having cats leaving their kittens under the bed by running helter skelter for help from cat lovers to remove cats an...

WHEN LOUSY EYESIGHT HAUNTS YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN

A conversation from September 2006 HK: NK, how are your eyes now? Nan: Didn't you ask him the same question the last time you met? (May 2005) NK: They're Ok now. But the astig(matism) is still there. How's yours? HK: (To Nan) We underwent the same procedure, of course I have to know the latest news. (To NK) Mine's still dry. NK: Still using the drops? HK: Of course. I need the fake tears. I just guess there's not enough tears in my eyes.... (said in a slow, melancholic tone) (During this conversation, the others kept quiet, not having undergone laser treatment. I wear glasses (mostly), Nan uses contact lenses, and SLL has near perfect eyesight) So, here's what I heard - laser ops should only be done after 30, because apparently before that, your eyes are not mature enough . I'm still about a year and a bit away from that, so at the moment, I wear glasses to work (because our environment is filled with chemicals and stuff), and contact lenses...
