Book Review - FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell (Part 1)
I'm old, sort of. BUT I have a thing for YA books.
My most recent purchase on Google Play books was Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I read the free sample, was intrigued enough that I purchased the book once I was done. I even followed the authors advice to skip the introduction and meet her there later.
I first read a Rainbow Rowell book almost 10 years ago (Eleanor and Park) I wasn't exactly young enough for YA back then too, but that story was compelling as well. I'll get to that a bit later
SPOILER ALERTS, I think
Like the author, I think if you want to read the book, don't bother with my review. I'm not in the mood for filtering what could or could not be spoilers due to the lack of practice in writing my thoughts and opinions for many years.
It's set in 2011/2012. The story starts with an introduction to Cather (or Cath as she prefers), our young female protagonist. She's 18, is a freshman and at that point has just entererd her dormroom where she mistakenly thinks she's been given a male roomate. You also get to see her father and her twin sister who despite their history as twins who did everything together seems to want a life apart in this new phase of their lives.
You later learn about Cather and her idiosyncrasies.
1. She writes fan fiction for a fictional fantasy series and is obsessed with the whole thing (think of all the fan fiction sites for Harry Potter which I read in the mid noughties)
2. She didn't have proper roomate conversations with her actual roomate (female) until much later
3. She survived on protein bars because she didn't know how to get food at her cafe , etc
You get the picture, she's your quirky character with a lot of complex issues. It doesn't help that she also faced abandonment from her mother when she was still a child.
To be continued
At least you're reading and you're enjoying it! I'm trying to get back onto track since 2024, managed a few books, but boy oh boy, my attention span needs help LOL. But I'm still trying...
ReplyDeleteOh trust me when I say that I'm having a tough time reading books too, so many distractions... the phone, a needy puppy, chores and BAD eyesight (for physical books)
